I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

Today I opened the EG section of The Age and lo and behold, one of my absolute favourite bands Wilco are playing in April. In the middle of the week. In the middle of the school term.

Insert piles of expletives.

The pain wouldn't be so much to bear if Wilco came out here more often, but this is the first time in a while they have been to Australia. Also, their new album comes out shortly afterwards so if I went I would get to hear all of their new material before then. Their live album from last year Kicking Television was great and there are so many songs I'd love to hear live. Just about everything from A Ghost is Born (especially, Spiders (Kidsmoke), The Late Greats, Hell is Chrome, Handshake Drugs, Theologians and of course Company in My Back which is an amazing song). Also A Shot in the Arm, Misunderstood, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, etc. Wilco made a name for themselves as an alt. country band awhile back but their last two albums have been amazing and well received everywhere. The funny thing is their old label Reprise dumped them just before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out thinking it wouldn't be accessible enough and they'd alienate their old fan base, so they were picked up by Nonesuch Records instead. The really funny thing is that Reprise and Nonesuch are both owned by Warner Music. (I bet Jeff Tweedy had a good laugh at that).

Anyway, the upshot is I think I am going to be really naughty and take a day off work the following day. I don't take sickies often, so taking one can be justified once in awhile. Does anyone want to join me? Let me know by next Friday and I'll book us some tickets.

Have a look if you want to know what I'm so excited about (http://www.wilcoworld.net).
