The Grates
I've been listening to The Grates a fair bit this week. I've heard many of their songs on Triple J but didn't realise some of them were Grates songs (Sukkafish, Rock Boys). Others I already knew (Science is Golden, Trampoline). Their entire album is great though. It has very few flat patches, in fact most of the songs are very catchy. I particularly like Nothing Sir, I Am Siam, Lies, Little People, 19 20 20 and I Won't Survive. Their music is rock/pop with a twist and the lead singer Patience Hodgson is absolutely bizarre but very funny. She dances energetically and on Spicks and Specks she was amusing too, last year. Their video clips are great, especially the one for Science is Golden which features some cute animated animals popping up everywhere as the band plays. They seem to have a strange obsession with animals though, especially the drummer. You'd think it would be too hot to drum from inside a panda suit... I wanted to see them live last year but didn't get around to going, so next time I'll definitely be there.
