I just finished writing a letter to the principal of our school telling him he was silly (although diplomatically... and it's also not just him) on behalf of the English faculty, so I'm a bit rushed tonight. But that's another story. I've been writing a fair bit and have been using a few different types of music as background. At the moment I've got Cornershop playing, the album called When I Was Born For the 7th Time which was released in 1997. I also own Handcream for a Generation which has one or two good patches and the rest is rather ordinary but since I bought it at JB for $10, a bargain is a bargain.
Anyway, it's pop infused with an Indian sensibility (Norwegian Wood in what could be Punjabi). The album features the song Brimful of Asher which is about the Bollywood star Asher Bohlse and was remixed by Fatboy Slim. It's pretty good. When I first bought it I thought I'd made a mistake, but over the years I've grown quite fond of the album. I should listen to it more often though. It was purchased when my tastes were on the cusp of changing and I was beginning to be more experimental with my musical tastes. It was also the very first CD I actually purchased myself with my own money.

What did your silly Principal do? All the Principals I have known since I have been a teacher (which is a grand total of 2) seem to be weird, vauge or quirky in some way...
Bec
He wanted to make informative writing a whole school priority in order to lead to improve VCE English results. Which is crap when you realise there is NO informative writing in our Year 12 curriculum. The focus is on PERSUASIVE writing. And we also spend ages telling kids not to write informatively when they are meant to be analysing, or writing persuasively. So hopefully he'll realise he's silly and do something about it.
I love the duet that Cornershop do with Paula Frazer on that album - Road Back Home.
Another all time favourite duet is the song I Never Talk to Strangers by Tom Waits and Bette Midler which features (rather unbelievably given how different their voices and styles are) the most exquisite harmony at the end.
Maybe you could do a post on memorable duets?
Great idea, Kat... I'll get back to it soon!
