I've been listening to a bit of Wilco lately in anticipation of the next gig I get to attend. I'm really looking forward to this one... there are a fair few songs I can't wait to hear and I'm hoping that they all appear on the set list. Wilco's range over the years has been quite extensive. They've gone from country inspired pop/rock (I Must Be High, Outtasight (Outta Mind), Casino Queen, Passenger Side), moody guitar distortion (Spiders (Kidsmoke), Misunderstood, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Reservations, Poor Places), energetic piano driven rock (Theologians, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Heavy Metal Drummer, Monday, The Late Greats, Shot in the Arm, Can't Stand It) to melodic ballads (Company in My Back, Hell is Chrome, She's A Jar, Jesus Etc).
The live album is a great showcase of all of this. And then they did the Mermaid Avenue albums with Billy Bragg. They're not a band to be defined by a genre or genres and they always try and break out of whatever labels are ascribed to them (their last two albums are a case in point). It should be a great show, in just over a week and a half's time at the Palais.
