Since it's the school holidays I've been indulging myself by being very lazy. I have been watching kids' TV on ABC 2 which has some half entertaining stuff on it occasionally, including the repackaged version of Sesame Street. I remember (nostalgically) the one-hour long shows that used to be on twice a day on ABC, once at 8:30 am and once at 3 pm. I remember lots of segments I used to really like and some of these are now available on a special DVD set of highlights from the 1969-1974 shows for adults. Anyway, I think the new version of Sesame Street isn't as original as the old one used to be, nor is it as interesting. And this isn't down to age. A lot of the really funny stuff appeared way back in the late 70s and early 80s and while it occasionally sneaks in, the new computer graphics aren't as enchanting as the old hand drawn things. I thought I would write about some of the best Sesame Street songs, in an attempt to relive my childhood.
1. The Ladybugs' Picnic: 'They talked about the high price of furniture and rugs and fire insurance for ladybugs'.
2. If Moon Was Cookie: '... it would not be fine, because if me ate it there'd be no moonshine'.
3. C is for Cookie: 'is good enough for me, cookie cookie cookie starts with C' (at uni we once tried to write a thousand line poem based on this song. I think we got up to line 250 something before giving up. I just remember the line 'Q is for brain if you're very surreal').
4. Yip Yip Family: This featured the Yip Yip aliens and is quite simple but very funny. 'Yip yip you, yip yip me, yip yip baby, yip yip family!'
5. Bert's Blanket: Bert was by himself and wondering about how his blanket was made (as you do) and in came a few sheep to tell him.
6. That is Why Placido Loves His Telephone: A send up of Placido Domingo (Flamingo) who sings about how he loves his telephone because he gets to ring everyone up.
7. Two Princes by the actual band the Spindoctors (featuring Zoe and two other monsters).
8. Caribbean Amphibian: 'he likes to hop in the tropical sea'.
9. Letter B by the Beetles (ha ha. I used to think this was the original version of this song, when I was about three).
10. Capital I: about people living in a capital I, 'in the middle of the desert in the centre of the sky'.
11. Captain Vegetable. How can you not like this song? It's bloody fantastic. 'It is I, Captain Vegetable with my carrot and my celery!'
12. There Are Chickens in the Trees: a funny animated song
13. How Many Elephants... 'can you fit in this room, before they fall through the floor?'
14. Imagine That: 'sometimes I imagine that I would like to be...' Ernie sings this one.
15. That's What Friends Are For: 'I am messy', 'very messy', 'and you don't mind if I am messy...'

Though the kitten army website died online many many years ago, you inspired me to seek out the original files... would you like a copy of the 1000 line poem?
On par with:
Deep Thoughts@Uni For Today - Monday 1st of May 2000
* Sara - National Environment Week disturbs my moral conscience. Sadly, I think that other Bunnings employees just don't give a shit.
* Alice - Coalitions are naaaauuuughty!
* Emma - Firebombs!
* Sara - Especially right-wing ones. Let's firebomb the royals.
* Emma - Can you imagine the words we could make up if we used 'w's and 'y's as liberally as the Welsh?
* Ning Yi - Wywythwythwyyyyy y wy *cough*
* Emma - My name implies egocentricity and bad grammar. Backwards and inside out I mean. Me am. See?
I actually used to have the 1000 line poem printed out and I'd love a copy, thanks.
Plus I remember:
Ningyi: But what you can't see can really hurt you, like a flying brick.
And also a conversation between you and Ningyi about culture shock.
