I bought Tracey Thorn's Out of the Woods so I'm sure that will be discussed soon. Very 80s and electronicky but also a bit less Everything But the Girl than you'd think. Part 2 of my discussion of Sky Blue Sky follows as promised.
7. Please Be Patient With Me
A beautiful number featuring guitar, Jeff and not much else. Quite autobiographical for Jeff actually. It's about his pain killer addiction and headaches and is addressed to his wife, asking for her (obviously) patience. He seems to have overcome this problem so that's a good thing.
8. Hate It Here
Next to You Are My Face, the best song on the album and one of the best Wilco songs of all time. Starts off slow and cruisy, telling the story of a person left by himself by the one he loves, trying to distract himself by cleaning the house. On one level it appears just to be about absence, but then it becomes obvious that the woman isn't coming back and even her mother realises this before the guy does! A great chorus and another of those two-songs-in-one. Great fun to sing along to as well.
9. Leave Me (Like You Found Me)
An almost pedestrian kind of track that doesn't jump out on a first or second listen but by the time you know the rest of the album well, you've heard it enough times for it to be great too. A 'sleeper', I guess you could call it.
10. Walken
Another great track, this one showing off the collaborative efforts of all the members of the band. A simple set of lyrics with guitars, piano and a tune that you can't help tap your fingers to while hearing. Another great chorus too, more good singalong fun here.
11. What Light
The single, which some people might find surprising given the other tracks, but it's a great song. A nice chorus yet again, with more multi-layered instrumentals and a showcase for Jeff's vocal talents.
12. On And On
A fitting end to the album. Melancholy but also strangely uplifting, returning to the minimalism at the opening of the first track as it draws to a close. More strings and heartfelt lyrics.
