Regina Spektor (14th July, Regent Theatre)

We missed the support act by thirty seconds but we were really there to see Regina so it didn't matter too much. And she was great. She stumbled out with a walking stick (we never quite learnt why, and it wasn't a fight as she suggested!) and sat down to treat us to an hour and a half of her amazing voice. She has the presence to fill the Regent, a beautiful (and comfortable) venue by herself accompanied by only a piano (and for two songs by an electric guitar). The audience fell to a respectful hush, although responded rapturously after each song especially the more well known ones. There was little participation and no singing. It seemed inappropriate somehow, even though we all knew the words.

The set list was full of recent favourites as well as tracks from her previous album Soviet Kitsch. She opened with a solo vocal number, then went on to play On the Radio, Flowers, Better, That Time, Apre Moi, Field Below, Music Box, Sailor Song, Ghost of Corporate Futures, Bobbing for Apples, Carbon Monoxide, a cover of the Beatles Real Love and a few other tracks I don't know including a great one about a model baby Jesus in a shop window.

The encore was also great and contained the wonderful Fidelity, a duet of Hotel Song with Only Son beat boxing which blew everyone away, the awesomely affecting Us and finishing with Samson. And Regina charmed us quietly with praise for the city and the theatre and for us, for selling out the show and filling the seats.
