On the weekend I made a trip to JB and purchased the new Rilo Kiley album Under the Blacklight. I'd read positive reviews of it in the paper and since I also have an electronic copy of their previous album More Adventurous I thought I'd probably like it. There are already some standout tracks after just a couple of listens- the title track, Close Call, 16 and others I don't remember. The band has a country-ish sound with a bit of an edge. The lead singer Jenny Lewis has an amazing voice, complementing the mixture of rock mixed with Eighties electronic backing.
Also, Mark bought the Jose Gonzalez album In Our Nature which is a personal candidate already for third favourite album of the year (behind Wilco and the Shins of course). It's a cruisy, beautiful CD full of Nick Drake-esque guitar work and Jose's distinctive vocals. The highlights include the title track, Down the Line and an amazing cover of Massive Attack's Teardrop which I'd add to my top songs of the year list after five listens. On the strength of this album we've decided to go and see Jose play at the Forum next year.
