When you see a band like Crowded House play for the first time since 1996, you assume that you'll be treated to a set list of favourites. Luckily, this was on the agenda for Friday night's show. The band did play a few of their new tracks, but stuck mostly to old well-known numbers. And what a great show it was. We got there just in time to hear Augie March, who played a short but excellent set of songs from all their albums (mostly Moo You Bloody Choir, and finishing with One Crowded Hour). They are so much better live than recorded.
Crowded House started not long after, opening with Private Universe and Everything is Good For You. This was followed by a few new and some unfamiliar songs (I think including People Are Like Suns), then Love You Til the Day I Die, the exquisite When You Come, Fall At Your Feet and then finished off with Don't Dream It's Over, Distant Sun and the highlight, Weather With You. I also loved that Italian Plastic was played, dedicated to Paul Hester. It's amazing that any band could get an entire stadium of people singing along to their songs, but this happened about six or seven times. Neil Finn and Nick Seymour entertained the crowd by exchanging banter and an attempt was made to introduce the newest members of the ensemble to the city and their audience.
The encores, of course, were dominated by old favourites such as Pineapple Head, Better Be Home Soon, Something So Strong, Locked Out and closed with Four Seasons In One Day. Although I didn't get to see performances of Mean to Me or World Where You Live, there's now something to look forward to the next time they're back in town. I'm sure it won't be too long!
