After a recent revelation concerning a song on the new Ben Folds album, I decided to devote this entry to songs I've previously misunderstood. I'm not referring to lyrics here, but rather the song's meaning or significance.
Errant Dog, Ben Folds
A metaphor for a guy in a relationship, sung from the perspective of his female partner. At first I couldn't work out why Ben Folds would become a lesbian due to his pet's misbehaviour, but then a cross-reference in You Don't Know Me spelled it out with a bit more blatancy.
Cornflake Girl, Tori Amos
This song is apparently about female genital mutilation and when you know that and listen more carefully to the lyrics, you go 'ewwww...'
Ticket to Ride, The Beatles
She's going away, but not with a Metcard. This song is referring to prostitution.
There She Goes, The La's
It's about heroin addiction, like Doctor Robert and Got to Get You Into My Life from the previous artist.
Brimful of Asha, Cornershop
At first I thought this song was just plain weird, but in a cool way. It took a little longer to discover it was a tribute to Asha Bholse, the Bollywood star.
