Inspired by 'The Polysyllabic Spree'

The idea for a blog has been floating around in my head for awhile, but until now I have been lacking a suitable theme. For Christmas one present I received was Nick Hornby's 'The Complete Polysyllabic Spree' and the idea of this kind of self indulgent reading record appealed to me, but at the moment I have a somewhat ambivalent relationship with books, having recently written a rather bad one.

Music, though, is always around. I have been a frequent CD purchaser since I first started working in year 12 and acquiring an iPod took my obsession to a new level. I now collect individual songs as well as CDs. Also, I have begun buying tickets to live music performances. I buy, on average, two or three CDs a month. Sometimes I buy three or four in a day, other times I download a single song (legally, if the Federal Police are reading this) and listen to it obsessively.

So this blog is going to become a series of musings upon current listening material. I envisage ruminating upon gigs attended, songs heard, video clips seen or favourite albums and artists. Since the idea first solidified a range of ideas have presented themselves to me and probably most of them will become posts in the near future. I'm excellent at making a lot out of not very much when it comes to words and at least while I'm enjoying the luxury of extensive free time, I can see myself developing an obsession too with blogging. However, high ambitions do not often proceed as expected. We shall see.

I will not be criticising others for their music taste (with certain limited exceptions- Sandi Thom will no doubt be mentioned soon!). Music is a personal thing in many ways. Songs are tied to our own individual experiences. I'm sure some cultural critic has already discussed this in a lengthy PhD thesis elsewhere. So I will on the whole endeavour to respect other tastes and mention mainly my own.
