Madeleine Peyroux (Norwood Town Hall, 18th January)

Just in case I actually HAVE some readers, rest assured that I'm not becoming slack. Rather, I've been away for a few days and have not had a chance to blog. I actually went to Adelaide to see a gig, and when I use the word 'gig' I mean 'concert'. It was a very different venue to the Northcote Social Club and even Hamer Hall- a town hall, where the average age of the patrons was well over forty. We were among the youngest there. We had fantastic seats right in the centre of the hall on the aisle and the performances were excellent. The support act was an Australian blues singer whose name I'm not sure of (Kat can remind me) with a voice that was incredibly difficult to decipher but loud enough to reach the back of the room with no aid from the microphone. I'm sure if I knew what he was saying/singing I would have found it amusing. He could definitely carry a tune and play, so it was still entertaining.

Madeleine Peyroux herself also put in a great performance. Most of what she played came from Careless Love and Half the Perfect World. She even got the crowd singing along with her for Careless Love. She played well off the other band members (the pianist was a stand out) and sang beautifully. I really need to listen to more of her stuff before I write any more about her though- on her new album she plays a cover of a Leonard Cohen song and a Tom Waits song.
