More Treasures

I thought today I'd revisit that old stand-by of 'one off songs in my iTunes library'. Here's a few more tracks I like and a brief attempt to explain myself.

Dumb Opinion, Diana Ah Naid
Until I reset the play count, this was one of the top played songs in my library. I remember taping it from the radio a couple of years ago, when I was starting my second teaching round back in 2004. At the time I had it stuck in my head for a good few days. It's great to sing along to, especially the bit that goes, 'problem is that it should've been a big secret, but I knew we couldn't keep it'. I like the changes in tempo and intensity that come as the drums kick in later on. I don't own this entire album but it is available on iTunes and I really should investigate it. Her song I Go Off was played a lot on Triple J in 1997.

Gorecki, Lamb
This is another of those old Triple J stalwarts, a song played again every so often. For this song everyone rings up the station to find out what it's called so they can try and track it down. It's a great song- six minutes of gorgeously ethereal vocals, a vaguely unsettling edge to the track as it drifts into the drum machine fuelled crescendo. And this is as poetic as I get. It's cool. Go find it.

The Ballad of Tom Jones, Space
The lyrics of this song are hilarious in themselves. The song is a collaboration between the former lead singer of Catatonia and someone else, a funny and upbeat duet about a couple who 'hate each other's guts'. The best part is when they sing 'still want to poison your pizza, and I still want to cut off your nuts'. Their relationship is apparently saved by playing Tom Jones on their car stereo as 'you were about to drive me over the edge of a cliff'.
