I've heard the Josh Pyke album through almost twice now and have to agree with the reviews I read that it's great. I think it will become, like Wincing the Night Away, one of my favourite albums of this year. Almost all of the songs are instantly likable and there's only one or two flat patches. And like the song Sleeping Lessons, it's likely that on repeated listening I will grow to like them more anyway. Favourites so far: Lines on Palms, Memories and Dust, Forever Song, Fed and Watered, Sew My Name and Middle of the Hill.
Yesterday we learned to play Norwegian Wood, both the chords and the melody (which is tricky, learning to translate tabs into music). I was inspired to go and buy a Beatles song book which I'm starting to mess around with. I need to brush up on a bit more music theory before I can play some of it. I also need to learn bar chords so I can play Sweet Jane which the Cowboy Junkies covered (it's only three chords, G, D and A for most of it, plus a D flat later on). I think that's supposed to happen in next week's lesson.
