For the past day I've been in the mood for certain kinds of songs. Last night I put on REM's Automatic For the People for the first time in ages. It's a great album. The opener is Drive is angsty and dark, the next track Try Not to Breathe is also great. That's followed by The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, one of those tracks which frequently features mondegreens (misheard lyrics) due to the Spanish-sounding lyrics which are actually 'call when you try to wake her'. Then comes Everybody Hurts, the best anthem for a bad mood going around. Later on you get to hear Sweetness Follows, Monty Got a Raw Deal, Ignoreland and then the album closes with Man On the Moon, Nightswimming and the beautiful Find A River. All in all, it's one of REM's more consistent albums and it's highly appropriate to being in a certain state of mind.
Also today I put on Tori Amos. More angsty music with an edge. One of the THE pianists of pop music. Maybe that's another entry for another time, piano-driven pop. That's Ben Folds Five, anyway.
