Dave Graney and Clare Moore (East Brunswick Club, May 19th)

I've never been to a gig with such an intimate crowd (a euphemism for 'small). But that didn't mean the performance of the act was lacking in any way. I rather enjoyed the set of low key, cruisy rock and soul-esque songs. The premise of the show was that Dave and Clare have reinvented a number of their notable tracks and are performing them in a minimalist way. The band featured two (sometimes three) guitars (one acoustic), vibes and an assortment of percussion ranging from triangle to hand claps. The acoustic sound was very appealing, perfect for a relaxed gig with a smallish (but attentive) audience. Also, the collaborations between the players were highly effective. Clare Moore's song A Lot to Drink About was a highlight, as was You Put a Spell On Me and Vengeance is On Its Way. I bought the CD Keepin' It Unreal so a lot of the material will probably become more familiar as I listen to it more. Overall, a pleasant way to spend an evening out.
