Just because I won't get to see them live (sob) I'll have to find other ways to satisfy my love of The Shins. I'll just have to listen to their albums really loudly and sing along. In the meantime I'm compiling a list of my top ten Shins songs just because... well, because this is my blog and I want to. By the way, if anyone goes to the gig can you buy me a tour poster? I've got one from last year (number 175 out of 500 limited prints) and I'd love another one.
1. Turn a Square, Chutes Too Narrow
A great little tune that's fun to sing along to in a slightly intoxicated state. Starts off with guitar chokes then a great riff and then skips up to the high end of James Mercer's vocal range for the crescendo.
2. Red Rabbits, Wincing the Night Away
The only song in the history of the world to feature an instrument called 'cat piano'.
3. New Slang, Oh Inverted World
A perfect song. Beautiful and addictive.
4. Australia, Wincing the Night Away
Not about the country but written while travelling here.
5. So Says I, Chutes Too Narrow
Apparently this song is a critique of communism, or something.
6. Kissing the Lipless, Chutes Too Narrow
Has the BEST kick off to any song. Handclaps, whoo!
7. When I Goosestep, Some random B side or soundtrack song
A simple song with just voice and guitar but amazing and addictive.
8. Turn On Me, Wincing the Night Away
Another infectious track from the new album.
9. Mine's Not a High Horse, Chutes Too Narrow
Who knows what this song's about, but it has a great title.
10. Spilt Needles and Phantom Limb, Wincing the Night Away
A dead heat for tenth place. The two most played songs in my iTunes library at the moment.
