The first support act Skipping Girl Vinegar surprised us with a set of infectious pop that sounded like Bob Evans at times and at other times like the headline act. We signed up for their mailing list on the strength of the six or seven songs played. Definitely a band to watch out for. The second support act Bit By Bats were OK, talented enough performers but their music wasn't especially inspiring.
Something For Kate themselves are seasoned performers who know how to please a crowd. Paul Dempsey made frequent jokes about his apparent split from the band and the band themselves breaking up, ignored stupid requests from loud members of the crowd and thanked people often for coming. Another thank you present was the four track CD handed out to the first 250 people through the door which has some covers and remixes on it. The set was a mixture of the old and the new with favourites from all their albums featured. The best included Cigarettes and Suitcases, Deja Vu, Monsters, The Anchorman, Song For A Sleepwalker and a cover of Born to Run plus several other songs I'm not overly familiar with from their B Sides album and Beautiful Sharks. The band alternated between the full complement of players and Paul Dempsey by himself, and one of the guitarists swapped his instrument for a violin at times. A great show.
On a separate note, I'm sure the Corner were exploiting the good will of the crowd by squashing as many people in as they could. I've been there before to see Lior with a far less claustrophobic atmosphere and even the Mountain Goats gig seemed more civilised. But The Shins was totally packed.
