Top Five Track Ones

This idea is pinched straight from High Fidelity. I actually have a top ten but I've left my list in Traralgon so I'll write about the first lot now and the next lot later seeing as I don't remember them all...

1. Airbag, Radiohead (from OK Computer)
A strong kickoff to a great album. Great guitar sounds with depth to them.

2. Kissing the Lipless, The Shins (from Chutes Too Narrow)
Handclaps and a cheer, followed by a little guitar riff that leads into the main part of the song.

3. Both Hands, Ani DiFranco (from Ani DiFranco)
One of her most famous songs which opens her first album, a minimalist effort consisting of her voice plus a guitar. Sounds great in its orchestral form on Living in Clip.

4. Closer to Fine, The Indigo Girls (from The Indigo Girls)
One of those classic tracks that doesn't date and doesn't lose its appeal despite frequent replays. I think this was THE song of Honours year at uni for me, some fourteen years after its release.

5. Misunderstood, Wilco (from Kicking Television)
A great opener for a live album. A lot more melodic than the version from Being There with less of the guitar distortion. Plus all those repeats of 'nothing, nothing' etc later in the song which must be great to sing along to when it's played live. I know this is kind of cheating since it's from a live album but it was on that list in the EG section saying it was a must-own, so I decided it could stay here.

I think Big Exit from PJ Harvey's Stories... is a pretty great opening track.
