I've done name songs so I'll move onto the obvious and related topic of place songs. Again this is only some of the ones I can remember, since I'm not working with my iTunes library within easy reach. I have a funny feeling as I write this that such a list may exist on my blog already. Oh well, too bad. I'll start with city songs rather than countries, since this is probably more fitting given the previous entry.
Dusseldorf, Regina Spektor
One of the excellent bonus tracks on the CD accompanying Begin to Hope. Highly addictive too, for some reason. Names a whole pile of places in Europe and describes the experience of visiting them in a weird kind of fantasy way. Hope I get to see this live on Saturday.
London Bombs, Eskimo Joe
From Black Fingernails Red Wine. A song about being very far away from the person you love for a long period of time and realising that they are increasingly disconnected from where you call home.
Chicago, Sufjan Stevens
From Come on! Feel the Illinoise! Apparently he has an ambition to make an album about every single state in the US. Judging by his recent progress, or lack thereof, I don't think this is going to happen. Still, it's one of the high points on this beautiful album.
Melbourne, The Whitlams
Written by the Sydney based band about Tim Freedman's relationship with someone in Melbourne (I think the same person that No Aphrodisiac refers to). Doesn't actually mention the title in the song. Wasn't played by the band in 2005 at the show we saw at the Corner Hotel either.
Adelaide, Ben Folds
Written about his newly adopted home city where rumour has it he no longer lives very often. Still, his wife Frally does call the place home so I'm sure he'll return a few times. The song is riddled with local references like the Rundle Mall statue although the mention of rain might surprise people... Adelaide's always been pretty dry, even before the drought.
