Hottest 100 2007

As the action unfolded on Saturday, some Triple J listeners began to lose their faith in humanity, or at least its capacity for good taste. The top ten was somewhat surprising. Who would have thought that a short period of release and some cross-over appeal would get I'll Kill Her by Soko into the top ten? Straight Lines was a predictable runner up, but Muse managing to win with their one single released last year was almost flabbergasting. And the Kings of Leon's On Call coming in ahead of Fans? It's really not a brilliant song.

There were some disappointments. Wilco don't rate on Triple J, let alone in the Hottest 100 so the absence of any of their songs wasn't a shock. It would have been nice for the Shins to get some more recognition, although if they did receive more attention there's always a danger commercial radio would also jump on board. Thank god they haven't yet. Also, only one Radiohead song made it into the countdown, that being Jigsaw Falling Into Place, a far less interesting song than Bodysnatchers or 15 Step, the other two tracks which have received heavy play recently.

Anyway, the songs I voted for did get up there, at least some of them. See below for details.

88. The Cops, The Message

79. Josh Pyke, Lines on Palms

72. Jose Gonzalez, Down the Line

33. Kings of Leon, Fans

29. Regina Spektor, Real Love
