Jose Gonzalez (The Forum, January 2nd)

There were some strange occurrences at the Forum last night. The main one was the house lighting being on throughout both sets, but the appearance of Missy Higgins at the end of our row of seating was also a little unexpected. And why were the booths in the centre row all roped off? Was it for VIPs? Never mind, because Jose, as anticipated, pulled off a great show. It was a short set which wasn't surprising (the two albums released in Australia total just over an hour) but full of everything we wanted to see.

Highlights included the single Down the Line, Stay in the Shade, In Our Nature, Lovestain, How Low, Killing For Love and the set closer Cycling Trivialities which seemed to be a favourite with most of the crowd. By the end of the night the material on Veneer seemed all the more likable, even though In Our Nature is probably a stronger album. After the brief break, there were a few songs in the encore to satisfy us further including a cover of Hand on Your Heart by Kylie Minogue and the anticipated Teardrop. Not many artists improve a song upon covering it (hear Regina's version of Real Love if you haven't already).

But why were the house lights on? And why has The Age stopped printing comic strips at the moment? Who can solve these mysteries?
