I went along to this concert not really knowing what to expect. I own one of Patti Smith's albums (Gone Again), have heard another (Horses) and have also heard the odd song here or there, but I wouldn't describe myself as a die hard fan by any means. I wanted to go so that one day I could say I had seen her. She's an important part of music history and someone who has inspired many others. As soon as she came out on stage and launched into Kimberly with her band, I knew it was going to be an enjoyable night.
Patti is a passionate performer and her band complemented her well. The bass player/keyboard player Tony Shanahan in particular was great, but all of the band members were fantastic. Her distinctive voice sounds even more amazing live, especially at Hamer Hall (it did take them awhile to get the sound mix right, though). My favourites were the covers- Are You Experienced, Smells Like Teen Spirit (up there with Tori Amos' cover) and Within You Without You which is one of the best Beatles covers ever. Up there with Regina's Real Love. There was also an affecting version of Beneath the Southern Cross that ran off into fantastic psychedelia for several minutes.
Every song was performed with passion and the crowd were appreciative. There was dancing in the aisles and people were on their feet through the encore of Horses and Gloria. There were a few 'wow' moments for me. I left feeling admiration for Patti and her talents and am glad I could see her play at least once in my lifetime.
There's a link here to a set list at Chris Boyd's blog (I don't know enough of the songs to write my own).
