One of the best albums out last year was by Vampire Weekend. If I could re-do my top ten albums, they'd nudge out Heretic Pride and wedge their way in at number five or six. The album is a great mix of different sounds and has the same addictive qualities as The Shins' Chutes Too Narrow. There's the Carribean influence on Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, the African beats on One (Blake's Got a New Face), the Scottish/Gaelic opening on Bryn, the stringed start to M79 and all sorts of other interesting instruments being used in an exciting and creative fashion. There's an organ-like sound on Mansard Roof and Oxford Comma.
The songs stick in your head, especially One which is fantastic. It's short, sharp and is the sort of album to lend itself to constant repeat listens and singalongs. I hope to see them live soon and to hear more of this stuff.
