Golden Age Part One: Regina Spektor's 'Far'

Regina's album is big... lots of songs (fifteen, including the two bonus tracks), big production, beautiful instrumentals, clever lyrics and as usual, the whole thing is a showcase for her voice which is an instrument in itself in the kind of way Thom Yorke's is for Radiohead. Even after many listens this week there are still a few tracks that I haven't quite got my head around. There are favourites though and stand out tracks. It's on par with her previous efforts, although there's no obvious equivalent to Fidelity but maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Opening track The Calculation is a cheerful pop song with cheeky lyrics and a catchy chorus which will soon stick in your head. Second track Eet provides a perfect counterpoint- it's more thoughtful, slightly melancholic but has a lovely melody and shows off her voice well. Blue Lips features more of the same but with a slower chorus and faster verse. Folding Chair is another cheerful pop song with some great lyrics. Single Laughing With has a chorus sung quickly and a moving and witty set of lyrics.

Other notable tracks include the edgy Machine which is reminiscent of Apre Moi, Dance Anthem of the 80s, a complex mixture of pop with electronic twists and Human of the Year with its multiple components that fit together especially well. It's an album with plenty of depth with new elements to discover upon each listen.
