It's list month at the moment, or I've just become lazy. I thought I'd write about some travelling songs, songs which seem to match the rhythms of public transport and cars. I play these while staring out the window of various vehicles at the scenery moving past.
1. Weather With You, Crowded House
A classic which accompanied me on my trip to the UK a few years ago. It matched Irish scenery in particular, the rolling green pastures and hills and stone fences of the countryside.
2. Tales of Endurance, Supergrass
I'm sure this song is deliberately supposed to sound like the rhythm of wheels turning. The first section is smooth and propelled along by the guitar/piano.
3. Protection, Ben Folds
The piano/drum rhythm here makes this song appropriate travelling music, also good for walking.
4. Bohemian Like You, Dandy Warhols
I suspect this song is here purely because it once appeared on a car commercial, but it's still good.
5. Frenetic, Orbital
Again has a suitable rhythm and changes pace about a third of the way through, with a switch in the melody. The vocals really suit the electronica undertones.

"It's good to be on the road back home again (again)" is one of my fave duets - I forget the name of the female vocalist ("Make way for the lady") but she's incredible. Others include "Your Ghost" (Michael Stipe with Kirsten Hirsch), "Kid Fears" (Michael Stipe again with Indigo Girls) and another re-offender - Iggy Pop - first with Debra Harry reinventing "Well did You Evah" then crooning "I'll be Seeing You" with Francoise HArdy. But nothing tops Tom Waits growling along with Bette Midler in "I Never Talk to Strangers" with an improbably exquisite harmony to finish the tune. Do you have any faves? Maybe that could be another post theme...
