After seeing the clip for their single Furr on Rage several times, today I bought Blitzen Trapper's album of the same name. Like Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses and the Shins, they're another group signed to Sub-Pop which seems to have a talent for finding bands who make great albums. The range of Furr varies from Even or Beatles-like rock songs, Simon and Garfunkle folk, Elton John piano, twangy-voiced roots and the odd distortion-driven track. The singers in the band change around according to the musical style on offer.
After a listen and a half I can envisage it becoming a favourite. Highlights include the single Furr with its beautiful folk melody, God and Suicide which continues in a similar vein and rock tracks Fire and Fast Bullets and Gold For Bread. Saturday Nite is dominated by a piano riff, a catchy rhythm and some great guitar and album closer Lady on the Water is another song to drift into sixties folk. Highly recommended.
